Job Description

Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default

At Proton, we believe that privacy is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of democracy. Since our inception in 2014, founded by a team of scientists from CERN, we have dedicated ourselves to providing free and open-source technology to millions worldwide, ensuring access to privacy, security, and freedom online.

Our journey began with Proton Mail, the largest secure email service globally, and has since expanded to include Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass. These tools empower individuals and organizations to take control of their personal data, break away from Big Tech’s invasive practices, and defeat censorship. Our work impacts hundreds of millions of lives, from activists on the front lines defending freedom to leaders in governments protecting sensitive information. In some cases, Proton’s services have even been instrumental in saving lives by enabling secure and private communications in high-risk situations.

Proton today supports over 100 million user accounts with a growing team of over 500 people from over 50 different countries, from the world's top companies and universities. We value intelligence, learning potential, and ambition in our hiring process. Adaptability is key as we navigate uncharted territories and redefine how business is conducted online. We believe smaller teams of exceptional talent will always prevail over larger teams with lower talent density. Proton has become profitable and reached scale without relying upon VC funding, largely due to superior talent that allows us to do things faster, more creatively, and more efficiently.

We have a global mindset and big ambitions but remain a start-up at heart. We value empowerment and flexibility and keep our structure flat to keep moving fast and avoid unnecessary politics. Tired of blending into the crowd? Join us and do work you can truly be proud of. Check our social media pages to learn more about us: TwitterRedditInstagram.

The Team

The Organic team is a small yet vital part of the Proton family. The significance of SEO is understood at the highest levels of the business; it serves as our primary traffic source and enables us to expand our customer base while maintaining a low cost per acquisition (CPA). SEO is a powerful tool for generating strong brand awareness and highlighting the various privacy issues that are prevalent in today's world.

The Role

We seek a motivated and detail-oriented Outreach leader to join our Organic team. The Outreach Leader will establish an internal outreach function to support multiple Proton products across core markets. This role will emphasise building relationships with major global publishers to secure authoritative links in relevant publications. Exceptional communication skills, a creative mindset, and a passion for driving SEO growth through offsite strategies are essential for success in this position.

What you will do

  • Outreach Campaign Development: Create and implement effective outreach campaigns to acquire high-quality backlinks from relevant and authoritative websites.
  • Agency Management: Oversee the agency roster and lead the link-building efforts of various agencies, guiding their activities to align with business unit objectives and planning their contributions to support internal campaigns.
  • Relationship Building: Establish and maintain strong relationships with journalists, major publications, influencers, and administrators of niche websites across various industries.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with diverse internal teams, such as PR, Social Media, Content, and Affiliates, to ensure that campaigns and content are optimised for link-building.
  • Performance Tracking: Monitor and report on the effectiveness of outreach campaigns, including metrics related to link acquisition, traffic improvements, and search engine rankings.
  • Link Prospecting: Through thorough research and competitive analysis, identify and assess potential linking opportunities.
  • Pitching: Supervise the creation of persuasive email pitches and engage in negotiations for link acquisition.
  • Competitor Analysis: Conduct regular analyses of competitors to identify new link-building opportunities and stay ahead of industry trends.
  • SEO Compliance: Ensure all outreach activities adhere to the latest SEO best practices and search engine guidelines.
  • Tool Proficiency: Effectively utilise media contact databases and standard SEO and outreach tools.

What we need from you

  • Four years of experience leading outreach functions on either the agency or client side.
  • A proven track record of working across multiple languages and markets globally.
  • Demonstrated success in improving search engine rankings (SERPs) across various markets.
  • Experience in securing backlinks from major publications in different markets.
  • Background in working with news media and journalists; established relationships with publications or journalist networks are a plus.
  • Proven ability to manage a roster of agencies, understanding their strengths and weaknesses, and effectively applying or removing them to maximise impact.
  • Experience in handling budgets and managing market splits to achieve optimal results in SERPs.
  • A history of keeping costs low while maintaining high-quality output.
  • Demonstrated success with previous creative campaigns that generated multiple high-quality backlinks, continuing to deliver value today—a creative mindset with the ability to generate innovative ideas.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Additional languages, notably German or Spanish, are advantageous.
  • Familiarity with outreach-specific PR tools as well as general SEO tools.
  • Understanding overall SEO and how outreach integrates with it and other marketing efforts and channels.

Even if you don’t meet all the requirements listed above, but feel you could still be a great fit, please still apply.
