POSITION SUMMARY:
- The Vice President of Construction owns the overall construction management (“CM”) and Execution Management (“EM”) functions at Avantus and is responsible for delivering utility-scale solar and energy storage projects across CAISO and the broader WECC markets. This role oversees all aspects of project and field management services from pre-construction planning through commissioning. The VP, Construction leads a team of project management professionals and contractors, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- This role is both strategic and hands-on—requiring deep industry knowledge, leadership agility, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally with internal teams, EPCs, subcontractors, and external stakeholders. The VP is a champion for best-in-class project and vendor management, a safety leader, and an advocate for continuous improvement in execution processes and team performance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Team Leadership & Strategy
- Lead and grow a high-performing construction management team aligned with Avantus’ clean energy goals.
- Manage Construction and Execution Management teams
- Oversee the full lifecycle execution pre-construction and construction of utility-scale solar and storage projects (>100 MW), ensuring alignment with budget, scope, safety, and quality targets.
- Develop and maintain robust project management and reporting processes; ensure team compliance and cross-functional coordination.
- Maintain executive-level accountability for performance against schedule and financial objectives, including managing project contingency budgets and risk mitigation strategies.
Vendor and Contract Management
- Ensure tight vendor contract execution and accountability; uphold owner responsibilities and enforce vendor deliverables.
- Support the procurement function as a key stakeholder in shaping contract terms and scopes.
- Maintain high-level relationships with vendors and contractors to ensure productive collaboration and effective escalation when needed.
- Champion continuous learning and process improvement through initiatives like Kaizens, lessons-learned feedback loops, and best practice refinement.
- Communicate lessons learned and best practices across the broader organization to ensure institutional knowledge growth.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Manage seamless handoffs between development, engineering, procurement, and operations teams.
- Actively promote harmonious team interactions and project continuity across all functional interfaces.
- Ensure the CM team has adequate 3rd party consultant and contractor support.
- Improve processes and ensure knowledge transfer across functions through the project life-cycle
Safety Leadership
- Serve as the company’s point of excellence for all safety-related matters.
- Develop and enforce safety protocols internally and with vendors, acting as the escalation point for executive safety concerns.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or related field.
- At least 15 years’ experience in construction management, with strong civil, structural, or electrical construction background
- Minimum 10 years of experience with a greenfield developer
- Proven experience leading a team of dynamic professionals across multiple active projects
- Deep experience with solar and battery storage construction contracts and execution.
- Familiarity with utility infrastructure projects, including high-voltage substations and BESS integration at 100+ MW scale
- Ability to foster effective communication and collaboration across field and corporate teams
- Strong executive presence and communication skills with the ability to deliver presentations to internal and external stakeholders
- Willingness to travel up to 40%
PREFERRED:
- MBA or similar advanced degree demonstrating proficiency in business and operational strategy.

The base salary range for this full-time position is listed below (plus bonus and benefits). Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.
