Duties and Responsibilities
Role Overview
The Scrum Master is responsible for ensuring that Scrum is understood and enacted.
They ensure the Scrum Team adheres to Scrum theory, practices, and rules.
As a servant-leader, the Scrum Master helps:
The Scrum Team improve delivery and collaboration.
Those outside the team understand how to interact with the team effectively.
Maximize the value created by the Scrum Team.
Service to the Product Owner
The Scrum Master supports the Product Owner by:
Finding techniques for effective Product Backlog management.
Helping the Scrum Team understand the need for clear and concise Product Backlog items.
Supporting product planning in an empirical environment.
Ensuring the Product Backlog is arranged to maximize value.
Encouraging agility and iterative development.
Facilitating Scrum events as requested or needed.
Service to the Organization
The Scrum Master contributes to the organization by:
Leading and coaching the organization in its Scrum adoption.
Planning and facilitating Scrum implementation.
Helping employees and stakeholders understand and embrace empirical product development.
Driving changes that enhance Scrum Team productivity.
Collaborating with other Scrum Masters to improve Scrum application across the organization.
Service to the Development Team
The Scrum Master supports the Development Team by:
Coaching on self-organization and cross-functionality.
Helping the team create high-value products.
Removing impediments to progress.
Facilitating Scrum events as needed.
Supporting Scrum adoption in organizations where it's still maturing.
Minimum Requirements for the Scrum Master Role
Agile & Scrum Expertise
Minimum 5 years of experience as a Scrum Master in a fully agile environment.
Deep knowledge of Scrum, Kanban, and SAFe frameworks.
Proven facilitation of Scrum ceremonies (Daily Stand-ups, Sprint Planning, Retrospectives, Reviews).
Proficient with agile metrics: burn-down charts, velocity, cycle time, lead time.
Workload Management & Capacity Planning
Skilled in balancing team workload for predictable delivery.
Anticipates challenges to avoid bottlenecks and delays.
Aligns workload with team capacity and skills.
Adjusts priorities dynamically without overloading team members.
Team Mentorship & Productivity Optimization
Strong leadership, coaching, and mentoring experience.
Helps team members grow and improve.
Encourages continuous learning and improvement.
Applies process optimization techniques to enhance velocity without compromising quality.
Stakeholder Management & Communication
Excellent communication skills across roles and levels.
Manages stakeholder expectations and ensures visibility into team progress, risks, and dependencies.
Bridges business and technical teams effectively.
Experienced working with distributed teams across time zones.
Technical & Tooling Proficiency
Proficient with agile tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence, Trello, Azure DevOps).
Strong in tracking and analyzing team progress via dashboards and metrics.
Understands development workflows and technical dependencies.
Agile Mindset & Problem-Solving
Drives continuous improvement and workflow optimization.
Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
Effectively balances multiple priorities and stakeholder needs.
Certifications(Preferred, not mandatory)
Scrum Certifications: CSM, PSM, SSM, or equivalent.
Additional: Agile Coaching (ICP-ACC), SAFe, Lean certifications.
Experience with Agile Transformation(Preferred, not mandatory)
5+ years of experience leading Agile transformations.
Skilled in coaching teams transitioning from Waterfall to Agile.
Able to assess Agile maturity and scale practices effectively.
